Caution: This column contains thick spoilers to The Last of Us and The Last of US 2 as well as violent descriptions.
Some who played The Last of US 2 criticize Ellies's rich-drive, violent development. In my view, however, this is not only comprehensible, but also the only logical; Although I am not a fan of drastic violence in the game.
No Joel!? When I heard that a continuation will appear to TLOU, in which we play Ellie and not Joel, I was extremely skeptical. In the first part Ellie had not disturbed me as a companion, but she was just a child with whom I could hardly identify. Joel, however, could hardly be more accessible.
He was far from perfect and showed numerous weaknesses and clearly criticizing behaviors. Nevertheless, I loved him because these weaknesses have just made him human. He has passed on to the new protagonist and quickly conquered the Darbe and adult Ellie my heart.
Do you remember? That was the first teaser to The Last of US 2:
Do you still know how it used to be?
Between the first TLOU part and the continuation, a very big leap was made, which causes first for a hard cut. In addition, between both games, a very specific development phase is reciprocated, in which enormous many change processes expire: the puberty. So also with Ellie.
In the Last of Us, we met her as a humorous and shy girl, which likes giraffes and comics and that in the DLC Left Behind's first tentic, romantic band to her friend Riley. Joel follows her everywhere and quickly holds trust to the smugglers. This binds itself as a father who has lost his physical daughter, much faster to the child than it is the case.
Just as he is aware of how important Ellie is to him and she begins to reciprocate these feelings and to accept him as a father, it comes to trust: Joel complies with Ellie. She seems to suspect that her only and closest caregiver was not sincere to her, but is silent.
Love and anger are close to each other
On this basis, we start the second part, now with the adult Ellie as a protagonist. The relationship with Joel has suffered over the years, probably whether the big lie. Both living in Jackson, who has built Joels Brother Tommy with and that has grown into a small town.
Only rarely we see the father's daughter team together. Ellie now surrounds mainly with the settlement of the settlement and leads their own life. Non-Testotrotz Joel and Ellie are incredibly important to each other, but both seems difficult to deal with it. Joel, whom the bad conscience and the inability to show feelings, plague and Ellie, who loves Joel, but feels that she was cheated by him.
Within sudly, Ellie makes it possible to create that no remedy could be found against the Cordyceps, which she attries her own survival. Only towards the end of the game we learn through a Cutscene that Ellie has already known for ten years that Joel has saved her from the Firefly Hospital instead of fulfilling her desire to serve science in the fight against the Cordyceps.
Whatever one may judge the relationship between Ellie and Joel, it is clear that it is not a simple and extremely tense. Much remained unsachted on Joels and Ellies side.

My relationship with TLOU 2 and Ellie is mixed. On the one hand, the first, very violent trailer turned away to the game and on the other hand I could not imagine that to control Ellie instead of Joel. Ellie's Rachefeldzug drove me and continues to pass through the story until I at some point with the circumstances spokes myself.
In this already difficult time, Abby with her "Wolfs" is looking for the killer of her own father. This was a doctor in the hospital, the Joel stormed in the first part to free Ellie. Joel kills the then nameless physicians. At least, at this time, from the point of view of the players, he was still an unknown. Everything but unknown, however, is Joel, who finally folded into Tlou2 by ABBY, tortured and brutally beaten together. Ellie has to look at this helpless. Abby's group keeps them fixed on the ground as they can do nothing, as screaming and plenating, they like Joel als calm.
When Abby finally drenched with a golf club for the last and deadly blow against Joels's head, everything is dull around Ellie. We only hear a shrill tinnitus and Ellie, which is still held on the ground and roars that it will kill everyone.
The fact that Ellie develops a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSB) due to events, which directs her actions, is no surprise and was confirmed in an interview with IndieWire of Narrative Lead Halley Gross and Director Neil Printant.
No understanding of Abby
I loved Joel. His death scene was with one of the worst video game moments that I have experienced so far and I was wildly determined to support Ellie in her endeavor to revenge. I am also one of the (felt) a few players, which do not feel any affection for Abby. I do not care that Abby had not easy in life, that she emerges an old youth love and that some people are at heart.
None of that justifies the way in which she killed Joel. I could not stand her until the end. There are no failed romances, the dead father or cuddly dogs. Especially since the latter yes as well as primarily for the purpose of the group are abused, which is accepted appropriately that they are injured or even killed.
Santa Barbara delivers the degree
Ellie and Abby struggle over the entire game until it comes to confrontation between the two product toners, Lev and Dina. The latter is almost killed by Abby, but by LEV's intervention, she finally leaves from Ellies's partner. At first, this seems to be the longest breakthrough in the circulation of murder and violence, Ellie continues to be persecuted by Joels's Todesszene. She now enjoys an idyllic life with Dina and her baby. Ellie is still suffering from her PTBS, guilt, because she still lives, although Joel is dead and the lack of salvation.
A detailed analysis of the end of The Last of US 2 can be read here:
Although their desire for revenge is still comprehensible, but that she leaves Dina and the child to turn on the search for Abby again appears meaningless. Only a few time after completion of the game, I was aware of how important Ellie's examination with Abby in Santa Barbara was also for me to complete Joel. That it still has lost everything is only consistent.
