Zelda: Ocarina of Time is now officially a PC thanks to Reverse Engineering

Old video game classics playing on modern hardware is a dream of many. But a dream does not have to stay, because there are always groups of resourceful people who make it true — albeit with illegal means.

For example, already Super Mario 64 was brought to the PC. For this purpose, the source code of the game was decompiled in years of small start. It is understood by the transfection of the original code of the game in a man-read program code. Thus, fans were able to create a super-mario-64 version for the PC that can be played without the emulator.

With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has now been added another Nintendo brand whose source code will be available for similar uses.

New possibilities for Ocarina of Time

Zelda 64 Reverse Engineering is a team consisting of many passionate programmers who have made it the task, the Game cube Master Quest version from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time recharge.

After two years of work, the members can now be pleased that the game code can be read with modern computers using the same procedures with which Super Mario 64 are translated back. According to a report by NGC, the programmers relied on to celebrate the following:

Last night, I have adapted both a remarkable community member and a project manager adapted to the last remaining function of the project. This means that the entire compiled code in the game was converted into people readable C-code. We thought For a while, that we may never be able to fully adapt every function, so this is an incredibly exciting performance.

The Game cube version was crucial because This contains some debug commands, which were helpful at work. Incidentally, they also want to convert other versions of Ocarina of Time and support them in their project.

Using the code, fans could now develop independent Ocarina of Time Games. As with Super Mario 64, the imagination is no limits here. For example, a PC version could be reconciled one to one. The Nintendo classic could also be updated graphically and brought visual effects like ray tracing into play.

Will Nintendo complain?

Of course, this news raises questions about the legality. According to the report, the group has only translated the entire code of Ocarina of Time before. The functions of the new code are therefore identical to the original, but the original assets are missing, such as graphics or sound.

Technically, Nintendo can not do it as presumably yet. Nevertheless, the publication of the homemade codes allows other fans to create new versions of Ocarina of Time. Above all, a PC version is always popular with Nintendo games.

At the Super Mario 64 PC version, Nintendo has reacted quickly. The publisher has prevented the further dissemination of the fan version with a lawsuit and also the deletion of any gameplay videos on YouTube obtains with the explanation:

The copyrighted work is Nintendo's video game Super Mario 64, including audiovisual work, software and fictitious character representations that fall under US copyright. The reported file contains an unauthorized derivative factory that is copyrighted on Nintendo's Work based.

As soon as games look like the code as like Ocarina of Time and listen as well, Nintendo can respond to the responsible persons. The team of Zelda 64 Reverse Engineering has probably therefore be made to make no further changes outside the refinement of one's own code. What others will make with us will show us the time.

Would you look forward to an official PC port of Ocarina of Time?
