If you play games for a while, you remember when the dubbing was downright... bad. It was often done internally, which often meant hilarious and offbeat performances. At the time before capturing performance, the actor game was not taken seriously. The pros thought it was below them. Developers often did not see the value. Or, they could not afford the named actors.
Little by little, things have changed. The games have become a big deal. There was more money to hire real actors. The capture of performance also really changed the equation. Now we expect a big budget game to hire the best players available. The great performances are not rare.
2021 was another good year for video game players and their job. Everyone in the chain — screenwriters to players, through directors — has helped create superb characters and performance. Here are some of our favorites.
It's very fun when an actor gets chewing the landscape. Armin Shi merman repeats his role as an exaggerated, inept and frustrated naughty in Rift Apart. Of course, an actor is as good as the material. In this case, it's fine. Dr. Nefarious is a hilarious wink in Ratchet.
Rivet is one of the delights of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. It is a female version of Ratchet, and it is funny, impertinent and skillfully interpreted by Jennifer Hale, one of the most busy voices in the games right now.
Mocking and threatening Leader Colt Van, Julianna Blake is a great enemy. Or perhaps frenzy. She is partly allied, old lover and partly enemy. His relationship is a mystery to solve between us and Colt. Obioha Akasha achieves incredible, fun and varied performance in Death loop.
By far, the best parts of the Guardians of the Marvel Galaxy are history, writing and actor game. Fans have a fairly accurate idea of emblematic characters. It takes a great writing and performances to satisfy them. Jason Cavalier has made an excellent performance as a draw. It was much more nuanced and funny than what we expected.
