Review: The Ascent (PS5) - The beautiful CyberPunk shooter is improved on PS5

The Ascent encountered slightly mixed reviews when launching PC and Xbox platforms about eight months ago, but it arrives on PlayStation 5 a well improved game. A multitude of updates have corrected bugs and rebalances various gameplay items from the output of the title in 2021. In addition, new content - like New Game +, a transmogrication system and a photo mode - have been added. PS5 players get all these good things from the start, as well as some dualsense features grumbling.

For non-initiates, The Ascent is a two-sticker isometric rpg game, located in a filthy CyberPunk spatial colony. You play an "indexe" - essentially a slave who knows how to use a firearm - forced to accept small jobs for the big criminals and lazy companies that make things work. In terms of history, everything is quite simple and, sometimes, a little obsolete, but the framework of the game, incredibly detailed and often beautifully dilapidated, really wears the experience.

Screenshots do not do justice to The Ascent. On a large TV with HDR in full effect, the bazaars soaked in neon and the alleys full of rubbish are fantastic. It's almost like watching a table game cleverly designed and painted - Environments are just as granular.

The RPG mechanisms of the title are not as engaging, but it is always fun to find a good loot and improve your personalized withdrawal. Building a character is quite simple with a handful of statistics in which you can pump skill points, but more depth can be found later in the game, when the upgrade of your arsenal and the increase of your cybernetic implants become a priority. Falling on an effective weapon that suits your style of play is also a strong point.

It is therefore a shame that The ASCENT's fight never really feels like moving during its 15 hours of execution. The shooting game is quite nervous and satisfying - improved by a haptic return - but there is simply not enough variation so that each fight stands out from the last. This is not what we would call insane, but the last hours can certainly seem a little painful, depending on your tolerance to identical and sometimes long meetings.

The Ascent is a solid shooting game, although somewhat repetitive, supported by breathtaking environments and a reasonable amount of RPG depth. If you can withstand a grumpy mission design and the occasional interaction of Buggy, then there is an explosive pleasure to have here.

  • Superbly detailed frame
  • Strong shooting game
  • Decent character construction
  • Good functionality Dualsense
  • Local coop and chaotic online
  • Great sound band based on a synth

  • Repetitive fights and missions

  • Rare progressing bugs require reloading
  • Enemy spawns may seem cheap

Good 7/10
